CANON POINT: an equivalent of the mid-1920s

SUITABILITY: He's over a thousand years old, and while he is a dragon he has been using a human form for 600-ish of those years, and has had plenty of sex along the way. He'll do just fine here.
HISTORY: Ali was born somewhere in the 800s, up in the mountains of what would eventually become his home country. He was from a clutch of six eggs, the last to hatch and also the only boy. Due to how dragons live a mostly-solitary life, Ali never knew who his father was. When he hatched from his egg, all he knew were the faces of his mother and sisters. His early life wasn't unusual, as for biological reasons most dragons that hatch are female and males typically are smaller than females as well. So when his sisters started to grow quickly while he only grew very, very slowly, nobody was concerned.
What was concerning, however, was when he was barely double the size of a hatchling (or roughly the size of a golden retriever, plus a long dragon tail) by the time he reached his first birthday. Even though males were always smaller than females, he shouldn't have been THAT small. Most males were big enough to topple cottages and pick up horses with ease. Ali would struggle with a sheep, much less a horse. His sisters were nearly fully grown by then, and his mother was ready to kick the kids out and let them find their own territories. His sisters kept it to teasing most of the time, but Ali knew from a young age that his small size would cause problems for his whole life.
Once he did leave the safety of his mother's cave, Ali quickly discovered how right he had been. Might makes right in the dragon world, and someone so small is very easy to harass and steal from. Ali used his size to his advantage, hiding close to human settlements and in smaller caves that the much larger dragons couldn't access. But he became very reclusive, sneaking out only during the night when most dragons slept. Whenever he managed to build up any semblance of a hoard, he would get raided by another dragon or by humans who stumbled upon the caves he lived in. Over the years he had worked on his magic, and eventually learned how to change his appearance to that of a human, but he could only hold that form for short periods of time, basically long enough to do trade with humans or steal something from a nearby village. The first 500 years of his life were spent like this, eking out a life for himself on the boundary between the lives of humans and dragons.
Then one day, everything changed.
Ali had raided the supplies of a human traveling alone, taking some meat and a few coins the traveler had while he set up a camp nearby. He had thought that he was sneaky enough, but the human caught him right as he lost control of his shapechanging and turned back into a dragon. Rather than being terrified of this, the human was interested. He invited Ali to sit with him for a while and talk. Ali was tempted to run, but the man offered him a few more coins he had on his person. So Ali ended up staying and listening to the man. This man carried with him a unicorn's crown, and he spoke of the country he had hoped to found. It wasn't far from there, just on the other side of the mountains, but Ali scoffed at the idea. After all, that place had been a frozen wasteland for centuries. Who would want to rule that? The man just smiled and told Ali to follow him and see. Ali's curiosity got the better of him, and he followed.
To his surprise, the land had indeed been restored to its former glory. Ali could only stare in amazement at the change, all while the man wore a proud smile. Then the man asked Ali to help him found the country. The small dragon was puzzled by this. How could he, a weak, useless dragon with no wealth to speak of, help build a human country? That's when the man offered Ali the position of 'keeper of the treasury', the one who would not only guard the gold but also handle all of the bills and accounting. The man reasoned that he would find nobody better for the job than a dragon, since dragons were incredibly capable at counting and maintaining their own hoards, noticing when even one gold coin was misplaced. Those skills could be transferred over to accounting pretty easily.
It sounded crazy. A dragon, helping humans? A human, trusting a dragon? Ali's shapechanging wasn't even practiced enough to maintain a human form for long periods of time. How would he fit in? And yet, something about the man's offer sounded intriguing, and if nothing else Ali could easily leave if things turned out bad. So, he accepted the offer, and he took up residence in the treasury once the castle was built.
This was how Ali met Ulrych, the first king of the Commonwealth of Ulrich (which got that name much later, Ulrych wasn't that egotistical), and the first human- first being in general- to show Ali true kindness. That act earned Ali's undying loyalty and was what made Ali start to grow interested in humans as a whole. Their insistence of following rules and being kind to one-another was a stark difference from dragon society, and it made Ali long to fit in with humans. And if not for that first king's kindness, Ali would have just stayed hiding for the rest of his life.
As it turned out though, Ali wasn't the only immortal- magical beings with lifespans much longer than that of mortals- to be a part of Ulrych's inner circle. The head of defense was a rather stubborn unicorn by the name of Concord, and from day one he and Ali butted heads with each other. Concord was very much out about what he was, and that earned the respect and admiration of many humans. Ali, being from a species with a much worse reputation than unicorns and also being a poor example of said species, chose to hide what he was instead. This was when he started going by the shortened version of his name, which sounded much more human than his full name. If he were to be truthful, at least some of his animosity towards Concord came from the fact that Concord was universally accepted while Ali was sure he would be rejected if the humans knew the truth. But most of the troubles between them came down to personality. During Ulrych's reign, Ali and Concord butted heads most of the time, rarely agreeing on a course of action. Ali trusted Ulrych's judgement, but that didn't mean he had to trust Concord.
It took decades, but eventually Ali came to realize exactly why Concord was chosen to help build the country. He was stubborn, brash, and even violent at times. But he had a kindness within him too, one that rivaled even Ulrych's kindness. And somehow, he was strong in every way Ali was weak, but also weak in every way Ali was strong. Where Ali would get too bogged down in small details and make questionable decisions in the name of 'the good of everyone', Concord could set him straight and make sure he didn't lean too far into those negative impulses that came from his dragon lineage. And where Concord would give the very short off of his back and work himself to the bone to help others, Ali could remind him that it was important to take care of himself first and hand off tasks to others to do too. The pair balanced each other out well, and eventually the two realized this and became more cooperative with each other. From there, it wasn't long before they developed a physical relationship, and then a romantic one.
Much time has passed since then. Over 600 years later and now it's 1926. Kings and queens have come and gone, and a monarchy has changed into a more modern way of representation. Magical creatures of all sorts have been slowly dying off as the world modernizes, unable to change with the changing world. And yet, the pair of immortals remain, watching over this country that their treasured friend asked them to protect. The task grows more difficult each year, as modern industrialization has affected Concord's health and Ali has been leaning heavily into financial investment and making questionable choices in a bid to grow his own personal wealth, but the two remain on-and-off friends and lovers, united by a common goal even when they're fighting with each other. They do agree on one thing though: "The Commonwealth of Ulrich" is an awful name for the country. It's not even spelled right!
ABILITIES: Being a dragon, Ali's primary source of magic is his fire. This fire plays a unique role in his world, as it's meant to 'burn away the old and corrupted to allow new growth'. Basically, it leaves the land as a blank slate, but fertile and ready for new growth. Think of it like a phoenix's fire, but for the Earth it self. Dragon fire can clear corruption and rejuvenate land to make it fertile once more. It's also just used as normal fire to burn things too. Being that he's 1100 years old now, Ali has quite a bit of control over this fire, to the point where he can fill a room with it and only burn what he chooses to burn(when he uses it around people but chooses not to burn them, it just feels comfortably warm to them). This takes a lot of focus to do though, it's far easier to just burn everything. He can also use this fire in his human form, but in smaller quantities than what he can do in his dragon form.
Along with his fire magic, Ali is naturally immune to fire. He can feel it's warmth but he won't be burned by any flames. Conversely, he has a weakness to cold and ice. He gets cold easily and sickness comes quickly after spending a lengthy time in the cold.
He's also learned shapeshifting magic, which is what lets him take a human form. It's pretty straightforward, he can shapeshift between his human and dragon forms at will and make small alterations to his human form (growing his hair out, making himself more muscular, etc.) The only things that must stay the same are his hair color (which is black, like his dragon scales are) and his eye color (which are red, like his dragon eyes are). These are static no matter how he changes his appearance. He's also gotten much better at this over the centuries, and now he can hold his human form even when he sleeps.
In his dragon form he has sharp claws that can cut through most substances (including some kinds of metal) and he can also fly. Though he is small, he can carry up to a human's weight while flying, though the flight will be very slow because he can't move fast while carrying that much weight. Unencumbered he's actually quite fast for a dragon, which is one of the few benefits his small statue has granted him. Sadly he does not have claws and cannot fly in his human form.
Finally, his nose is very sensitive, even in human form. He can pick up on scents that most humans miss, and can actually identify other immortals based on their scent. Dragons, for instance, will smell like charcoal or sulfur if they used their fire recently. He can also identify people he is around regularly by smell alone, though he is reluctant to explain exactly what people smell like because he knows humans find that weird.
VICES: Greed - Being a dragon, Ali has an innate sense of greed and self-serving. All dragons have one thing they like to collect above all else- often gold, but it can be just about anything- and for Ali his special item is coins, specifically gold and silver coins. He makes for an excellent keeper of the treasury because of his hoarding instincts, but it does not make him popular with most people. He's hesitant to cut checks for expenses, will argue and make elaborate charts about why it's best to pay as little as possible, and has been called stingy and miserly by even people he sees as friends. He also does that dragon thing of sitting on top of his coins sometimes, and he gets embarrassed when he's caught doing that.
Utilitarian - Ali loves humans, but outside of a few specific exceptions, that love is of the species in general. He is very utilitarian in his views, seeing humanity's success as a whole over the suffering of individuals. There have been times in the past where a crisis has happened and Ali had to help plan rescue missions or relief efforts, and he has always been about helping the most he can. But 'most' isn't 'everyone', and he has come to accept that this is a reality of helping a country function. When you work on such a large scale, there will always be someone falling through the cracks, and Ali has come to accept this as another kind of cost rather than try to patch those cracks. Mind, he will respond to humans struggling if it's right in front of him and he can do something about it, but he will almost always take the needs of the many over the needs of the few. (the lone exception to this is Concord: he will move heaven and earth to keep Concord safe and happy.)
Pride - Another part of being a dragon, Ali takes pride in his accomplishments. But maybe a bit too much pride, if you ask anyone who knows him well. He's an excellent mathematician and has become good at keeping the social part of working for a government, and he doesn't take kindly to anyone insulting either of those skills, or his competence in anything really. He's also really sensitive about height jokes, given how small of a dragon he is. Ali would say that this behavior is normal, but it does go beyond what a normal person would do. Ali is controlled by his pride as much as he is his greed, and he will sometimes do stupid things to prove a point that only makes sense to himself. He can also be very argumentative when he thinks someone is poking fun at him about something. It doesn't matter if they actually were making fun of him or not, he's very sensitive at times.
VIRTUES: Adaptable - This is what has helped Ali survive all these centuries. When Ali faces a struggle, he doesn't just use the old ways of doing things if they prove ineffective. When he couldn't fight against other dragons for territory or riches, he found ways to avoid conflict rather than fight. When he struggled to hunt animals, he started taking already-processed meats from humans instead. When he couldn't fit into dragon society, he found a home with humans. When humans started changing and forming a more advanced society, he changed along with them. So many immortals have died because they couldn't respond to a changing world, but Ali is one of the few who can adapt to changing situations and find a way to survive. This also makes him much more open to meeting new people and experiencing new situations, which has led to a wealth of knowledge that he would not otherwise have. This also helps him with meeting new people too, as he will focus on ways they can get along rather than being bothered by how someone is different.
Loyal - Ali's start to life wasn't the best one, which is why he struggles to trust people. He's friendly to everyone who hasn't earned his ire, but he doesn't form a strong bond with anyone immediately. It takes time and effort, but once he is close to someone he is eternally loyal to that person. Ulfrych earned his loyalty through weeks of kindness and a much longer track record of kindness before. (It was indirect, but Ulfrych saving Concord led to Ali's eventual trust in him.) Concord earned his loyalty through decades of upstanding behavior and a strong sense of morals. But he would do anything for those two, literally anything. Even Ulfrych, who has been dead for centuries, still has Ali's loyalty. More than once Ali has gone in to correct historical records about Ulfrych when someone got something wrong, because he cares about the man that much. And Concord? Ali is prepared to let the world go back to the bronze age if it means keeping Concord alive and healthy. (No really, that is his 'plan Z' if he can't find a way to keep Concord healthy otherwise.)
Clever- He's not smart in the sense of 'went to college and got a PHD' or 'is an expert in their field', but Ali is very clever. He's mathematically inclined and is quick to pick up on anything he's invested in learning. As the world advances around him, Ali has a drive to learn how complex machinery works and understand its full capabilities. His cleverness goes beyond math and technology though, as he can make up plans on the fly and is very socially savvy as well. He can also come up with solutions that are outside the box and can catch enemies off-guard. Sudden changes in plans are annoying, but he can work around them. It's very difficult to catch him in a trap or manipulate him because of this: even if he doesn't catch on right away, he will before long, and he'll also have a plan to escape the situation or turn it against whoever is conspiring against him.
SUIT REQUESTS: diamonds or clubs! Either would play well off of Ali's vices and get a good reaction out of him. Of the two, diamonds would be my preference, because I am a degenerate and would love to play out the diamond effects. There's no deeper reason than that, I'm just a fan of the effects it has. Also he is kind of passive when it comes to sex, so the suit would give him an excuse to be more forthcoming with sex, be it in a dominant or submissive way.
But clubs is also a good choice for his suit, as it would play really well into his vices and all of the old impulses he has from his dragon lineage. Despite his best efforts to be a good person and live as a human, he already often overthinks things and has greedy and prideful impulses. Being a club would feed into those negative traits he already has and make them stronger. (Also I already have characters with hearts and spades, which is why I would prefer not to have either of them. A new suit to play with would be nice plz)
RANK REQUESTS: somewhere middle of the pack would be good
SAMPLES: TDM thread with Concord
a TDM top level for him, plus some threads
the original PSL for Ali and Concord. This is from much earlier in their world than we're apping them from (Ulrych is still alive in this thread), but it's the start of their relationship basically. (Also the 'srsbznss' journal is me, that's my anon journal for PSLs.)
