Typically yes, they are further away. But they do look beautiful like this.

Back home we light them off to celebrate the birthday of the first king. That's in summer though, so it's a lot warmer than it is right now.

You don't do any of this in the winter?

[Well, he has to tell the story now.]

It's been nearly a millennium since the time of the first king, so records of his reign can be hazy. But one legend does remain: the first king faced down a land of eternal winter and found a way to break through the frost. He made an alliance with the Immortals, borrowing the fire of a dragon and the healing of a unicorn to melt the eternal freeze and make the land fertile once again.

[The story isn't completely accurate, but all stories are made better with some embellishments.]

We don't know how truthful that tale is, but my home country of Ulrich has stood for centuries. We modern residents must be proof of the first king's legacy, no? But that is why we don't really celebrate anything in winter beyond the new year: Each winter serves as a reminder of the eternal winter, and it's when the snows melt and spring arrives that we celebrate again.
